Backup storage

Each server writes its backups to its own disk, in its backup location: /srv/backups unless you choose another. Backups → Storage shows every server’s location, and moves the backups to another disk.

Backups → Storage with each server's backup location and an offsite destination

Under Where backups are stored, each server shows its location and how many backups it holds. Choose Storage beside a server, or Backup storage on its page, to open its dialog. It shows the disk the location is on, how much is free, and the backups already there. Disks on this server lists every other filesystem the server has.

  1. Open the server’s Storage dialog.
  2. Under Disks on this server, choose a disk, or type a path under Location. The panel checks the path as you type.
  3. Leave the switch that moves the existing backups on, to take them along.
  4. Choose Apply and move backups, or Apply when there is nothing to move.

On an added server, any valid path works at once. The panel creates the folder and checks that it can write there before it keeps the new location.

The Move backups job copies each backup, checks its checksums, points the panel at the copy, and only then deletes the original. An interrupted move leaves each backup whole, in one place or the other, and running it again finishes the job. A backup that another job is using stays where it is, and the log names it. New backups go to the new location once the move is done.

The panel runs in a container that sees only the folders it was started with. A new location outside them takes two steps on the server, and the dialog shows both. First, add a line such as BACKUP_ROOT=/mnt/data/backups to /opt/wpl7/deploy/.env. Then recreate the panel, which creates the folder and mounts it:

Terminal window
sudo /opt/wpl7/provision/compose.sh up -d panel

If the server had no location of its own yet, the panel takes BACKUP_ROOT as its location when it starts. Otherwise, come back to the dialog and apply the new path.

Or mount the new disk at /srv/backups and change nothing in the panel. Copy the backups already there onto the disk first: once it is mounted over the folder, the files in it are hidden.

  • A location may not be /, a system folder, or inside or around the live data under /srv: sites, mysql, panel, mail, traefik and plugins.
  • When the panel takes BACKUP_ROOT at start, it moves nothing. Backups taken before stay where they were, listed and restorable, until retention removes them or you delete them.
  • The location of a server the panel cannot reach cannot be changed.
  • Backups stay on their server when a site moves to another one.
