Delete backups

Deleting a backup removes it everywhere: its files on the server and its offsite copies. A deleted backup cannot be brought back, so the panel always asks first.

  1. Find the backup on the site’s Backups tab or under Backups → All backups.
  2. Choose Delete. The dialog says which remote copies go with it.
  3. To free the server’s disk but keep the remote copies, switch on Keep the remote copies. The backup then stays listed as remote only.
  4. Choose Delete.

A destination with Retention is managed by the provider switched on keeps its copy, and the panel says so. If a remote copy cannot be removed, the backup is kept, so nothing stays in a bucket without the panel knowing.

Edge On Backups → All backups, tick the backups to delete. The box at the top of the list ticks the whole page. A bar then shows how many are selected. Choose Delete on it, type delete, and confirm.

With a filter on, ticking the whole page also offers Select all: every backup the filters match, on every page. Set Kind to Before an update, for example, to clear those out on every site. The selection is fixed when you make it, and holds at most 5,000 backups. Without a filter, Select all is not offered.

Edge On the site’s Backups tab, choose Bulk delete. It opens Backups → All backups filtered to that site. Tick the page, choose Select all if the list runs over several pages, then Delete. Type the site’s name to confirm.

Edge One Delete backups job works through the selection, oldest first, without holding up any server’s sites. Each backup goes the way Delete takes one. Rows the job has not reached yet say Deleting…, and cannot be restored, fetched or copied. A backup another job is using is left alone, and the job then ends as failed, naming it.

What deleting a site does with its backups

Section titled “What deleting a site does with its backups”

When you delete a site, Take a final backup first (kept until you delete it) is on by default. The final backup and the site’s other backups stay after the site is gone, under Deleted sites on Backups → All backups. Scheduled ones still follow retention. Deleting the last complete backup of a deleted site asks you to type its name.

Edge To take the site’s backups along, switch on Delete its existing backups too as well. Once the site is gone, a Delete backups job removes them, remote copies included. The final backup is not among them, so with both switches on, the site leaves exactly one backup behind. With only the second switch on, nothing of the site is left.

  • A deleted backup cannot be recovered, from the server or from a destination the panel cleared.
  • A backup cannot be deleted while it is being written or uploaded, or while a job for its site may be reading it.
  • A destination that manages its own retention keeps its copies. Remove them with the provider’s tools.
  • Deleting a backup’s local files with Keep the remote copies leaves it restorable only after Fetch back.
